Matt Grady is based in Southeast Boise and offers in-person and online instruction on snare drum, mallet instruments, timpani, drum set and hand drums.
Matt has a MM in Percussion Performance from Temple University in Philadelphia and has extensive performing and teaching experience across the U.S.
He is currently an adjunct professor of percussion at Northwest Nazarene University and has served on the percussion faculties at Temple University Preparatory Division, the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, the Music Center of the Northwest in Seattle, and the Sun Valley Summer Music Institute. He also served as percussion coach for the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
I focus on the fundamentals of percussion and musicianship. The entirety of drumming can be broken down to the combination of several specific motions; I teach those motions in a structured manner and demonstrate how they apply to the music that a student is most interested in.
Musicianship begins with learning how to read music; this starts at the first lesson. From there, ear training, sight reading and sight singing are introduced when the student is ready to expand their musical horizons.
Simply stated, I want my students to play. In this sense, "play" has a double meaning:
First, I want my students to be as proficient a drummer/percussionist/musician as they want to be. To this end, I provide my students with specialized teaching materials presented in a carefully crafted learning sequence.
Second, I want lessons to be fun and engaging. Young students (and, in reality, everyone) learns best through "play." We'll play a lot of drums in lessons and strive to create an environment that is intellectually playful.
I have flexible scheduling and can accommodate your instructional needs, whether in-person or for online drum lessons.
Please email to find the best lesson time for you and your family.
