Extensive Teaching Experience

Hi, I'm Matt Grady! I've been a percussion and drum teacher for two decades. I offer marimba lessons, xylophone lessons, drum set lessons, and timpani lessons in Boise. I teach all ages and all skill levels and begin working on the drumming mechanics and the basics of reading music at the first drum lesson. My advanced students have received many distinctions, including selection for All-Northwest and National Youth Orchestras, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition. All college-bound students received scholarships to their preferred university music programs.

Real Professional Performing Experience

I bring a wealth of performing experience to our lessons: I've held timpani and percussion positions with Opera Idaho, Boise Philharmonic, and the Hawaii Symphony. I've performed with Seattle Symphony, Utah Symphony, Utah Opera, and the PNW Ballet. I've also played drum set in rock bands, jazz groups, and musicals and marched in Scottish pipe bands.

I have a Master's Degree in Music Performance from Temple University in Philadelphia, where I studied with Philadelphia Orchestra percussionists Alan Abel and Chris Deviney.

It's important to ensure that teacher and student are the right fit. That's why I offer a complimentary trial lesson with no obligation at my Southeast Boise drum lesson studio. You'll be shown a proper grip, how to play a fundamental drum stroke, and how to read basic notes and rests.

I also operate Idaho Percussion Services, so I'm able to provide my students with drum sets, marimbas, xylophones and other percussion instruments at no cost while enrolled in lessons.
